Pioneer Families,

Welcome to the 2020/2021 school year! The first day of in-person learning is Tuesday, September 8, 2020 for students whose last names begin with letters A - L. For those students whose last names begin with letters M - Z, the first day of school is Wednesday, September 9, 2020. On Thursday, September 10, 2020, all students will attend school. Our day begins at 8:06 a.m. and will end at 3:00 p.m. All virtual program students will begin on September 8th, 2020.

First Day Procedures:

If you are driving your student to school, please note that drop-off procedures have changed. The parent drop-off loop is located at the back of the middle school. All students will enter through the backdoors of the building in the following manner:

5th grade will enter through Door # 4 (located on the east side of the cafeteria).

6th grade will enter through Door #3 (located in the new wing)

7th and 8th grade will enter through Doors # 5 and #6 (located by the band room and woodshop, respectively)

Please make sure that you pull forward as far as possible to allow other students to be dropped off safely.

Students may enter the building at 7:55 a.m., and shall not exit the vehicle until this time. Doors to the middle school WILL NOT BE OPEN prior to 7:55 a.m. Please note that this time has been updated to conform to required safety protocols. We appreciate your support and understanding, as we cannot have students congregating either outside or inside of the school.

Students will report to their first hour class. Staff will be present at each entry point to help those students who do not know their schedule.

Busing:

All students who ride the bus are required to wear a mask throughout the duration of the trip. Students must use the provided hand sanitizer upon entering the bus.

Main Entrance Changes:

The middle school has a new intercom system located to the left of the main door. Please use the buzzer to speak to staff members in the office. Please note that all entrance doors will remain locked throughout the school day. The intercom system must be utilized to gain entrance to the office.

Virtual Open House:

We will not be holding an open house at the middle school this year. Please check your email for a virtual open house presentation for both in-person and virtual learners. When half of the student body returns on both September 8th and 9th, students will receive orientation on school procedures.

Masks:

All students and staff will be required to wear masks while on the CLMS campus. Please make sure that masks are school appropriate. Lanyards are being provided to our students to clip their masks to. If a student arrives without a mask, one will be provided to them by the school. Face masks must cover from the bridge of the nose to bottom of the chin. Additional mask information will be shared next week.

Student Schedules:

Students’ schedules are still being finalized. An additional communication will be sent when schedules can be viewed on Skyward. A paper copy of the student schedule will be made available for all students on the first day of school.

Food Service:

Breakfast at CLMS will be served in 1st hour classrooms. Pre-packaged breakfasts will be consumed at each student’s desk. First hour classes have been extended in order to accommodate time to eat without losing instructional time. Each grade will have its own lunch period. Students will select their assigned lunch seats during the first week of school, to be used for the duration of the marking period. This will allow the school to ensure social distancing. Students are allowed to remove masks while eating, but they must be worn at the conclusion of the meal. Students will remain seated until directed to exit the cafeteria by staff. Further information concerning virtual student meals will be provided in a future communication.

Parking During Student Drop-Off / Pick-Up:

All students at the Middle School will enter the building in the drop off zone at the back of the school, and students will be dismissed from the back as well. During the times from 7:45 a.m. - 8:15 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. - 3:15 p.m., we are asking parents not to park in front of the school. Your cooperation will assist us in ensuring a safe traffic flow during the busiest times of the day. Parking in the front lots of the middle school will be reserved for parents and guests entering into our Middle School and District Central Offices throughout the school day.

Skyward:

Students and parents can access their grades, attendance, and important messages through Skyward.  If you need your login information please contact the main office at (810) 679-1400.

School Supplies:

Please see the Recommended School Supply List tab on the Middle School page of the district’s website (www.croslex.org) for a supply list for each specific grade level.

Backpacks:

While our area remains in a Phase IV status, students will be permitted and encouraged to carry backpacks during the school day in order to reduce trips to lockers.

Lockers:

5th Grade: Combination locks have been removed from 5th grade lockers in order to increase student accessibility and reduce congregation around lockers. Please be advised that valuable items should remain at home.

6th, 7th, and 8th Grades:

6th, 7th, and 8th Grade students’ lockers will have combination locks.

All Grades:

Each grade will have a designated locker access time - this schedule will be shared with students during the first week of school. Students will be required to empty and take home the contents of their lockers at the end of every day. Locker shelves and personalization items will not be permitted. This is a precautionary measure in case the school should need to transition to a different phase or due to extended student absences.

School Communication:

Please check out our website at www.croslex.org for daily announcements, calendar of events, and staff directory information.

Facebook: Like Croswell-Lexington Middle School to receive weekly notifications on current school news and events.

Apptegy: Please make sure your email is updated in Skyward to receive school communications.

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS):

This year will mark the second year of our PBIS system to encourage good behavior and learning habits. The system is based on the acronym Pioneer P.R.I.D.E. - (P)repared, (R)espectful, (I) am kind, (D)ependable, (E)ngaged. Students will be taught acceptable social behavior in different school settings and receive reinforcement towards meeting these expectations. Students may earn PRIDE tickets that they can redeem for rewards and a weekly winner will also be selected by random drawing from those receiving tickets. Similarly, a detention system will be implemented for repeated failures to meet expectations. Detentions will be conducted during lunch times on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Academic Support Systems:

Academic Support Lunches will be conducted on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays for those students who are missing 3 or more assignments.

Cell Phone Policy:

The Middle School will continue its cell phone policy that prohibits students from using their phones during the instructional day. These devices may be utilized before and after school and during the lunch/recess period. During class periods and passing times, phones are to be kept in lockers. If you need to communicate with your student during the days’ instructional time, please call the CLMS Office at 810-679-1400. Please understand that the use of personal devices during these times causes disruptions to the learning process for all students and becomes a safety concern in the hallways.

Guidance Counselor:

CLMS would like to welcome Mrs. Kortney Ball, our new guidance counselor, who was hired just before the school closure. For questions regarding student schedules, please contact Mrs. Ball at kball@croslex.org or call (810)679-1430.

Class Field Trip Updates:

At the current time, field trips are suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the governor’s Return to School Roadmap during Phase IV. If field trips resume, a student’s ability to attend is dependent upon the student’s behavior. Students will be unable to participate if they have received suspensions totaling 3 days (both in-school and out-of-school) OR if they have received a total of 6 detentions.

Road Construction Update:

Starting September 8th, M-90 will be fully-closed for through-traffic beginning at the west driveway of the high school through the intersection of Croswell Rd. and extending towards Howard St. near McDonald's. The closure should last two weeks. Croswell Rd. is also anticipated to be closed at a future date. As the District finds out more details about the road closure and impact on the school district, information will be shared as soon as it becomes available.

Athletics:

We will continue to follow MHSAA published guidance.

Personal Reusable Water Bottles:

Water fountains will be shut down during Phase IV. All bottle-filling stations will remain open. Please use a reusable water bottle.
